How to Read US Battery Date Codes Flooded Lead Acid: For flooded lead acid batteries, the date code is stamped using two letters and a number. The first letter refers to the month it was manufactured: A-L refers to January – December. The number refers to the year in which the battery was made. For example: 2 would be 2012, 3.

  • “Read the label for the battery date. The date is preceded by either a P or S, the next two numbers indicate the month and the third number indicates the year. An example would be S 119, which means the battery was manufactured in November 2009.”

So this is how i’m supposed to read the date. I just took my battery out of my car because it wasn’t starting. its 5 year warranty. So, i’m trying to determine when it was made. On the battery it says P 052R . Does that mean May 2002? Can battery last like 13 years? My accord is 2003, so can battery be older than the car?
    I attached the picture.
    Thanks.

  • Nearly all industrial batteries have type information as well as a serial number stamped on top of a lead intercell connector. The battery type is identified by a code such as 18-75-25. This example represents an 18-cell (36-volt) battery with a plate capacity of 75 ampere hours (for each positive plate), and 25 total plates (both positive.
  • There are cases when the code is in a different place depending on the battery maker. Other places to find the code would be on a sticker on the top or side, or imprinted on the side. This guide should help the majority of golf cart battery owners to learn about their battery age. Check out our golf cart battery sale.
  • The only two numbers I have on the new battery are a serial number: 003 and a 'Varta Code' on a QR sticker, which is A 26 E39 902 8OC. Can anyone offer some guidance? May 21, 2019 #2.
  • The serial number is next to the battery number and date code, and it is important not to confuse these two numbers. People sometimes also confuse the specific year. For example, confusing a 2005 battery when it is a 2015 battery, as the 5 digit is the same in both cases. To avoid confusion ensure you gauge your approximate replacement date.

  • If the 3 digit code only has one digit for the year, it could be 1992, 2002, or 2012. The OEM battery is usually a rebadged unit from one of the major manufacturers with the Honda logo. I would guess that the battery was replaced in mid-to-late half 2012.

It’s possible for a battery to last 13 years, but highly unlikely. Also, a 2.5 to 3 year life seems short to me.

I would charge the battery first and then having it tested. Most autoparts stores will peform this test for free. Also, you could check the water level and specific gravity (if it’s not a sealed battery). ETCG has a video on the topic.

Right or wrong, I read that as May (05) of 2012. If there’s a suspected issue charge it for a while and load test it.

Batteries can fail at any age though. Most hold up well but I’ve had some that went belly up in less than a year and in some cases a few months. I currently have one shaky battery right now that is failing at 11 months of age.
A long time ago I bought a new battery from Sears and it flat died the very next day; as I found out when I got off work and the car was dead. I took it in the shop, charged it for a while, and load tested it. Total junk Sears Die Hard didn’t even make it 24 hours.

Just like anything that comes off of an assembly line there’s going to be a number of flawed ones.
